The IIN is as Specialized Organization of the Organization of American States (OAS) in childhood and adolescence, which assists the States in the development of public policies to be taken for the benefit of children and adolescents, contributing in the field of their design and implementation in the perspective of the promotion, protection and full respect of the rights of children and adolescents in the region. Special assistance is aimed at the needs of the Member States of the Inter-American System and at the particularities of the regional groups.

VISION

To position the IIN as a centre of excellence and a political and technical reference point in the region in matters related to child rights, with linkages within the Inter-American Human Rights System and closely connected to the United Nations System.

To contribute to the development of public policies which will ensure the promotion, protection and enjoyment of child rights in OAS member States, and promote the development of a culture of rights, within the context of strengthened democracy.

To strengthen the capacity of OAS member States and their respective societies by means of the relevant institutional frameworks, in order to comprehensively safeguard the full enjoyment of child rights, free from any discrimination.

  • 1. To develop knowledge, means and tools, which will support the States in establishing efficient and comprehensive policies, strategies and actions for the promotion and protection of child rights.
  • 2. To support and encourage the States in their tasks for the implementation of policies, plans and programmes, with regard to following up, advocating for and monitoring the effective fulfilment of child rights.
  • 3. To promote the sharing of experience and lessons learned among the States, generating relevant and timely knowledge in the context of the regional realities.
  • 4. To create conditions for the effective participation of children and adolescents in the different settings of social life, and particularly in all phases of public policy related to their rights.
  • 5. To strengthen the IIN’s position as a Specialized Organization of the OAS in the area of childhood, regionally and internationally; and reinforce it as a regional lead agency for the United Nations System.
